Use these checks when people cannot hear you, your camera is blank, or Teams cannot find the correct device. If a meeting is in progress, use chat, dial-in audio, or another approved device so the meeting can continue while you troubleshoot.
Before a meeting, open Teams > Settings and more > Settings > Devices. Under Audio settings, select the intended speaker and microphone. Use Make a test call when available; Microsoft notes this is not available in Teams on the web. During a meeting, use the arrow beside the microphone and open additional audio settings to choose the correct device.
On Windows, open Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone and turn on microphone access, app access, Microsoft Teams (work or school), and desktop-app access as applicable. For video, open Settings > Privacy & security > Camera, enable app access, and allow Teams. If a permitted toggle already appears on, Microsoft suggests switching it off and on, then closing apps and restarting.
Also open Settings > System > Sound. Under Input, select the intended microphone and confirm it is enabled and not muted. Do not install drivers from an unknown website; use Windows Update, the device manufacturer, or IT support.
On macOS, open System Settings > Privacy & Security, then check Microphone and Camera. Allow Microsoft Teams (work or school), close Teams fully, and reopen it. On iOS or Android, open the system app permissions and allow Teams to use the required device.
The browser needs site permission in addition to operating-system permission. In Edge or Chrome, open site or privacy settings, select Microphone or Camera, choose the correct device, and allow sites to ask for access. Reload the Teams tab after changing permission. In Safari, use Settings/Preferences > Websites, select Camera or Microphone, and set the Teams site to Ask or Allow.
If the browser still fails, test the supported Teams desktop app, or test a private browser window only if company policy permits. Do not disable security extensions or browser controls that your organization manages.
Test the device in the operating system's Camera or sound recorder app. Then test a different headset or webcam in Teams, or test the same device on another approved computer. This separates a Teams configuration issue from hardware failure. If the camera works everywhere except Teams, capture your Teams device selection and permissions. If it fails everywhere, contact IT or the hardware manufacturer.
Remote Desktop and virtual desktop environments may redirect audio/video differently. Do not change managed VDI policies yourself; report that you are using Remote Desktop or VDI. For an urgent meeting, Teams may offer Call me or phone audio, depending on your organization's calling setup.
Contact your IT help desk when permission toggles are unavailable or managed, no device appears in Teams, the issue affects multiple users or meeting rooms, VDI is involved, or tests indicate a driver or hardware problem.
Provide: device/OS, Teams desktop or web version, meeting type, microphone/camera model, selected Teams devices, whether test call works, whether the device works in another app, permission screenshots, and exact error text. Do not submit test recordings or meeting content unless specifically requested through an approved channel.
