When to use this guide
Use these checks when QuickBooks Desktop works on the host but a workstation cannot switch to multi-user mode, or when an H202, H505, or related H-series message appears. These errors usually mean the workstation cannot communicate correctly with the computer hosting the company file. They do not automatically mean the company file is damaged.
Symptoms
- A workstation displays H202 or an H505-type message.
- Single-user access works on the host, but multi-user access fails.
- Some workstations connect while one or more cannot.
- The error began after a restart, network change, QuickBooks update, or server maintenance.
- Users are unexpectedly asked to switch modes.
Safe numbered checks
- Record the exact scope. Take a screenshot of the complete H-series error. List the affected workstation names, host computer or server name, QuickBooks year and edition, and the time the issue began. Ask whether any network or server work occurred recently.
- Protect the company file. Ask all users to save work and close QuickBooks. Confirm that a recent verified backup exists before any tool scans, configuration changes, or repairs. If the backup cannot be verified, stop and contact Zerolimit.
- Confirm the correct network. On each affected workstation, verify that Windows shows a connection to the normal approved office network. If working remotely, use only the organization-approved remote-access method. Do not connect directly to a company file across an ordinary VPN or internet file share unless Zerolimit has specifically designed and approved that setup.
- Check whether the host is available. Confirm the host computer or server is powered on and reachable through the normal business workflow. Do not reboot a server that supports other users without approval. Note whether other shared resources are also unavailable.
- Check QuickBooks behavior without changing hosting. Open QuickBooks on the affected workstation and note whether the error appears when opening the file or when choosing
File, then Switch to Multi-user Mode. Do not select Host Multi-User Access on workstations. Hosting should normally be controlled on the designated host.
- Compare another workstation. If another authorized workstation can open the same company file, record that result. If nobody can connect, stop retries and escalate because the issue may involve the host, database service, permissions, or network path.
- Use Intuit network tools only when directed. Zerolimit may run QuickBooks Database Server Manager or the Network Issues section of the official QuickBooks Tool Hub on the correct host. Do not scan random folders or change the company-file location.
What not to do
Do not change Windows sharing, folder permissions, firewall ports, DNS, static addresses, network profiles, drive mappings, hosting settings, or server services unless Zerolimit directs the work. Do not disable security software. Do not rename, move, overwrite, rebuild, condense, repair, or otherwise alter the company file. Never restore a backup over the current file. These actions require a verified backup and Zerolimit direction.
When to escalate
Escalate when all workstations fail, the host is unavailable, users may be opening different copies, the error returns after a normal restart, or the issue follows server or network maintenance. Treat the case as urgent if payroll, billing, or another time-sensitive operation is blocked, but do not include payroll or financial data in the ticket. Zerolimit can coordinate the network, server, and QuickBooks checks safely.
Include in the ticket
Provide the exact error and screenshot, QuickBooks year, edition, and release, Windows versions, host and affected workstation names, whether single-user access works on the host, whether any workstation still connects, time last known working, network or server changes, and backup confirmation. Never send passwords, MFA codes, bank credentials, tax IDs, account numbers, payroll data, license keys, or customer financial records.
