When to use this guide

Use these steps if QuickBooks Online rejects your sign-in, you forgot your user ID or password, a verification code does not arrive, the newest code is rejected, or you no longer have access to the email address or phone number on your Intuit Account. An Intuit Account controls identity and sign-in. It is separate from the QuickBooks company and its accounting data.

Safe troubleshooting steps

  1. Confirm the starting point. Open the official Intuit sign-in page yourself rather than following a link from an unexpected message. Check that you selected the intended user ID and QuickBooks company. Record the exact error text, but do not include a password or verification code in notes or screenshots.

  2. Use Intuit's recovery flow. Select I forgot my user ID or password, enter the email address or phone number associated with the account, and follow the prompts. Keep the code-entry tab open. If you open email in a browser, use a separate tab. Intuit says only the most recently requested verification code will work, so stop requesting new codes and wait for the latest message.

  3. Check code delivery safely. Look in spam or junk folders, review any mailbox filtering, and confirm that messages from Intuit are permitted. For text delivery, check whether the phone or carrier blocks short-code messages. Use the on-screen option to resend once if needed. Never forward a code, read it to support, or approve a prompt you did not initiate.

  4. Try an available verification method. Depending on what was previously configured, Intuit may offer email, phone, passkey, voice message, or an authenticator app. Multi-factor authentication can still be requested on an unrecognized device even when optional two-step verification is off. Do not remove or replace a working method merely to troubleshoot.

  5. Rule out a browser session problem. Close and reopen the browser, then try a private or incognito window. If a password was just reset, clear only Intuit site data or follow Intuit's browser troubleshooting guidance before trying again. Avoid repeated rapid attempts because they can complicate recovery.

  6. Use account recovery when contact methods are unavailable. Follow Intuit's official recovery form and identity-verification instructions. Submit identity documents only through the official Intuit form, never through a support ticket, email, chat attachment, or shared drive. Processing may not be immediate.

What not to do

Do not share passwords, MFA codes, recovery links, identity documents, or screenshots containing sensitive data. Do not create a replacement Intuit Account unless an administrator confirms that this is appropriate. A new account may not have access to the existing company. Do not ask another user to share their sign-in. Do not change accounting records while diagnosing access.

When to escalate

Open a support ticket if the official recovery flow loops, the correct user ID no longer shows the expected company, every configured verification method is unavailable, or a verified password reset still fails in a private window. Contact Intuit directly for identity recovery or suspected account takeover. If an unexpected MFA prompt or security-change email appears, stop and escalate promptly.

Include the affected email address in masked form, company name, approximate time and time zone, browser and device, exact error text, recovery option attempted, whether the issue occurs in a private window, and a sanitized screenshot. Never include passwords, codes, full phone numbers, tax IDs, payroll data, or customer financial records.
